Freeview Boxes

The analogue television signal is gradually being switched off already, so if you still don’t have digital TV sorted, you will need to think about it soon. Also, if you have any older television sets that are not digital, you may want to sort out a digital signal for them too. To receive digital TV, the only thing you need is a Freeview box.

Freeview boxes give television sets the ability to show the free digital TV channels, which include all of the main original terrestrial channels, such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five, as well as their many additional digital channels such as BBC3, BCC4 and E4, plus a host of other digital channels that are not subscription based.

You do not need a satellite dish or a cable installed to watch Freeview TV, all you need is a Freeview box connected to your television and you’re ready to go. Connecting your Freeview box to your television is typically straightforward, and requires only a single cable plugged between the two. If you need to connect your Freeview box to more than one device you can either shop for one that has more than one socket or look at the various switching devices that can also be purchased.

Freeview boxes are not expensive, and you can get a decent model without having to invest a considerable amount of money. There are a number of additional options that some models provide, and so you may wish to consider these as well.

Recording
Some Freeview boxes also come fitted with storage space in the form of an internal Hard Drive, through which you can actually record and store television programmes for later viewing if you wish. These vary in terms of the amount of storage space provided, and it generally makes sense to get as much memory as you can for your available funds. Video files take up a lot of storage space so what sounds like a large amount of storage may not actually in reality accommodate many of your favourite TV shows and films.

If you do choose a recording Freeview box, check out the functionality that it offers. For example, some models will allow you to capture one channel for storage while watching another channel on the TV set, but in some cases this is not possible and you therefore can only watch the programme being recorded at the time.

Future
Set top Freeview boxes are a quick and easy way to enjoy digital television broadcasts, and do not require any sort of long term financial commitment. You simply purchase the box and can receive the signal indefinitely. However, most of today’s new digital television sets can receive digital TV signals without the need for a separate box, as the digital facility is built in. This means that if you’re planning on buying a new TV, there’s not going to be any need for a Freeview box as well, and for this reason they are really only suitable for people who want to watch digital television on an existing non-digital set.
